Graduate Software and Test  Engineers
Location: Langley, Berkshire
The Opportunity:

We are really pleased to have further openings for Graduate Software Engineers and Test Engineers to join our team in Langley.
Interviews are taking place on a rolling basis and start date will be October 2013 or later.

The Telepresence Infrastructure Media Products team, based in Langley, Berkshire, has become a specialist engineering centre for the design and implementation of the most technologically advanced video conferencing infrastructure solutions available in the market today.

Graduate Software Engineers:

Based on massively parallel processor architectures, the work spans FPGA programming, hardware-level programming, operating system implementation, DSP work (including multiprocessor media processing frameworks and codecs), protocol implementation and highly advanced control and management applications. A particular characteristic of Cisco is that we build the vast majority of our software in-house to obtain the performance and flexibility required. Working in a design centre of around 120 people the role will involve applying mathematical skills to media processing software development. The successful candidate will have a strong mathematical background, and programming experience. Since our software is deployed in embedded products, we are looking for candidates interested in using their mathematical expertise to write video and audio processing software.


Primary Responsibilities of a Graduate Software Engineer include:

• Involvement in the specification of new products and features
• Design/development of the products and features, working independently and as part of a wider team
• Both architectural/system design and detailed coding
• Working closely with the test and support teams to ensure and maintain the quality of the product
• Working with other groups (manufacturing/documentation etc) involved in shipping finished products

Skills Required:

• Strong written & verbal communication skills
• Ability to multi-task and solve complex problems
• Ability to self-motivate with a strong desire to learn and ability to be flexible
• Proven track record of learning new technologies and features on own initiative
• A demonstrable passion for technology and hardware/software development
• Excellent mathematical or scientific qualifications
• A flare for applying mathematics to problem solving

Additional Skills of successful Graduate Software Engineers (not required):

• Knowledge of C/C++
• Knowledge of low-level system software and/or real time embedded software
• Exposure to digital hardware design, FPGAs and VHDL
• Exposure to video and audio encoding and processing techniques and technologies
• Understanding of assembly languages
• Exposure to cryptography
• Communications and networking protocols

Graduate Test Engineers:

The test teams in CDO play a crucial role in achieving this and work as part of the R&D organization alongside the hardware and software development engineers. As a member of the team you will play an integral part in the R&D process working on new products and technology throughout the full product development lifecycle (requirements capture, through design and implementation to system testing and integration). The units are designed from the ground up with test in mind and function according to the required specification and customer use cases including scalability, performance, interoperability and usability. You will be required to meet tight deadlines, whilst effectively managing priorities and communicating progress.

Primary Responsibilities of a Graduate Test Engineer include:

• Work very closely with the software development team planning, developing and executing the test strategy
• Help narrow down the exact cause of software bugs and provide repressible scenarios
• Design, develop and execute manual test cases as well as develop automated test suites
• Assist the technical documentation group with content for the product documentation
• On occasion attend external test events to test products for conformance with relevant international specifications
• Work closely with other product teams around the world (particularly California and Norway)
Professional Competemcies Required:

• Strong written & verbal communication, interpersonal, multitasking, and problem solving skills
• Ability to self-motivate with a strong desire to learn and ability to be flexible
• Proven track record of learning new technologies and features on own initiative
• Demonstrate an interest and passion for development and programming
Additional Skills of successful Graduate Test Engineers (not required):
• Knowledge of C++, Python and object oriented programming
• Networking products and technologies (such as; TCP/IP, Ethernet, VoIP, Switches, Video codecs, ISDN, PBX, Cisco CallManager, Streaming, H.323 and SIP)
Requirements for Both Roles:
Education

• B.Sc. / B.Eng. / M.Sc. / M.Eng. / Ph.D. from a top ranked University with a 2:1 or 1st class honours degree in the areas of Computer Science, Engineering, Science, Mathematics or other analytical disciplines
• A minimum of AAB at ‘A’ level or equivalent
• Graduated with undergraduate or graduate level degree or due to graduate in 2013/4.
• Ability to live and work in the UK with no additional VISA sponsorship from Cisco
Eligibility Requirements:

• Graduated with undergraduate or graduate level degree within 24 months of start date
• Ability to live and work in the UK with no additional sponsorship from Cisco
• Must be fluent in English
